kemet foundation continues its mission of giving
The Kemet Boutros-Ghali Foundation for Peace and Knowledge was established in 2018 through an initiative launched by a group of friends, colleagues, and students of Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Leading this initiative was Mr. Mamdouh Abbas, a prominent Egyptian businessman and a graduate of the Political Science Department at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science — the very department that benefited most from Dr. Boutros-Ghali’s academic contributions, as he chaired it until his appointment as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in 1977.
The idea behind the foundation was to honor the memory of Dr. Boutros-Ghali in a way that would continue the mission and values he dedicated his life to — not as a tribute to a person, but as a service to society by carrying forward the goals he so faithfully pursued. The foundation’s name reflects two notable aspects. The first is the word “Kemet,” believed to be the ancient name of Egypt, meaning “black land” — a reference to the fertile soil left behind by the receding Nile floodwaters. Whatever the scholarly debate over the precise meaning, its selection as the foundation’s name expresses deep pride in the land of Egypt, which Boutros-Ghali deeply loved.
The second distinctive element in the name lies in the words “peace” and “knowledge” — a clear reflection of Boutros-Ghali’s legacy. He reached the highest levels of scholarship and dedicated his writing and work, especially during his tenure as Secretary-General of the United Nations, to the cause of peace.
What is most remarkable about this foundation, however, is its scholarly approach. Its Board of Trustees includes a number of highly respected and influential figures who have laid out a clear vision for the foundation’s work — enabling it to begin and continue achieving its objectives in a direct, swift, and effective manner.
