The Boutros Boutros-Ghali Foundation for Peace and Knowledge held its annual ceremony yesterday, Thursday, coinciding with the birthday of the late Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former Secretary-General of the United Nations (November 14), to honor the winners of the Foundation’s 2025 awards in its seventh cycle.
The ceremony was attended by Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States; Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs; a number of former ministers and members of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees; a select group of public figures, diplomats, members of parliament, and Engineer Ibrahim El-Moallem, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Shorouk.
Mamdouh Abbas, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Boutros Boutros-Ghali Foundation for Peace and Knowledge, presented the awards to the winners from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, of which the late Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali—former Secretary-General of the United Nations and former Head of the Department of Political Science—was one of the most prominent founding fathers.
Scientific Awards
In the field of African Studies:
Dr. Dina Osama El-Sayed Ahmed Lotfy won first place for her dissertation entitled “The Position of Religious Institutions on the Shift Towards Authoritarianism.”
Second place went to Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Sattar Mohamed Suleiman for his dissertation “Civil Society Organizations and Their Role in Peacebuilding in Africa: Case Studies of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
Third place was awarded to Dr. Noha Mohamed Nadim Imam for her dissertation “Challenges and Mechanisms of State Recovery After Conflicts in Africa: A Comparative Study.”
In the field of Public International Law and International Organization:
Dr. Haitham Sayed Ahmed Ahmed Omran won first place for his dissertation “The Permanent Objection Principle in Contemporary International Law.”
Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Fattah Ahmed Arefin won second place for his dissertation “Mechanisms and Means of Combating the Crime of Torture and How to Hold Perpetrators Accountable under International Law.”
University Excellence Award
The Foundation awarded its prize to student Jihad Mohamed Abdel-Samie Ahmed for achieving first place with honors in the Political Science Department at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, for the year 2025.
Student Anan Ayman Issa Abdel-Rahman also received the same award for her academic excellence, having achieved first place with honors in the same department for the same year.
